This is a 1988 model, State, 40 gallon, natural gas water heater. It was replaced today with a new State, 50 gallon, natural gas water heater by Pat the Plumber in Topeka. Topeka has very hard water. Notice the heavy buildup of scale and mineral (calcium and magnesium primarily) on the inside walls of the water heater. When this happens, a water heater's efficiency is dramatically reduced. A 1/2" of mineral buildup can reduce the efficiency of a water heater 30%. The scale measured 1/4" thick in places on the sidewalls and 2" thick on the bottom of the water heater. Transporting the water heater back to the office loosened scale buildup on the walls causing it to fall to the bottom of the water heater. Also notice the deterioration of the water heater anode rod. The anode rod greatly extends the life of the water heater. Moral to the story. Flush your water heater every 6 months to a year. Have your anode rod checked and the water heater serviced yearly to keep up its efficiency up. Check your Temperature and Pressure Relief valve yearly to prevent explosions. See your owner's manual to for more complete servicing instructions. -Pat the Plumber
